LYNN — The Lynn School Committee reviewed a fiscal 2027 budget proposing 53 position cuts and 46 new hires. Superintendent Cohen said the district found $5.5 million in savings, including $2 million from curriculum supplies, $2 million from special education tuitions and $1.5 million from contracts, plus about $243,000 from an executive leadership restructuring that eliminates the vacant Chief Academic Officer role. Of the 53 cuts, 26 positions are already vacant and 34 licensed educators will get closed-position letters.
Staffer April Reid said the district no longer uses "bumping and bidding," instead placing displaced licensed teachers on a seniority-based list for open positions. Member Castellanos said she wants "more impact assessments" on union and community outreach. The committee also approved a $50 donation to LVTI SkillsUSA and $650 in donations to Connery Elementary, both unanimously, and a 7-0 roll call for a union leave request.
No vote was taken on the budget itself.
